The action takes place on one of Grand Safari vast concession in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. We are now at the end of May 2010 and Philippe wants to check these Golden Blesbok out that I mentionned to him last night. As far as I know, there are only two herds of these golden blesbok in South Africa, so I presume in the world, and we are very fortunate to have one of them here on our 30 000 acres concession, amongst an other 60 odd species.
The next day, we spotted the herd a few hundred yards away, they are grazing in the open, but the ridge behind them should bring us to shooting range. A quick walk around the hill and we are now within 200 yards of that nice ram on the right. We almost bumped into a herd of Roan in the process, but the wind was in our favour and they just walked past us. Soon, Philippe can put that golden blesbok in his Schmidt & Bender scope and the .375 H&H Mag bullet did the rest.
My friend became one of the first hunter ever harvesting a Golden Blesbok. He is a collector and already has the common, white and yellow blesbok, together with 2 bontebok taken 2 years ago on the same concession. His blesbok collection is now “up to date” as would say Xolilé my tracker!
Later that week, Philippe will also harvest a Watsui Wild Cattle originally from Kenya. What a beast, but this is another story …
